In the course of early development, cells acquire their specificity through the action the gene networks driving cell fate determination and cell differentiation.
These systems are intrinsically complex, both fragile and resilient at the same time. Mathematical modelling of gene networks is an essential facet of computational biology allowing for deep understanding of the biological system in question, as well as for nonintuitive insights into how such systems can be manipulated. Building predictive models is especially challenging as stochasticity of gene expression presents significant challenges.
For years now fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, has been a model organism to study transcription and gene regulatory networks. We use a combination of experimental approaches and stochastic modelling to characterise and investigate transcriptional regulatory networks during early embryo development and in the complex eye of the fruit fly.
